Describe a value, lesson, or opportunity passed down to you from a previous generation. How has it shaped who you are today?
When I was a little boy, my grandmother—who was born before cars were commonplace, before mankind had yet to fly, when radio was unknown, and when telephones weren’t common in homes (but who lived to see a man walk on the moon live on TV)—told me that it was important that “to thine own self be true.” What she meant was that I might fool others, but I could never fool myself. The implication was that I needed to be comfortable in my own skin and happy with myself, regardless of whether I measured up to someone else’s expectations.
