Describe a value, lesson, or opportunity passed down to you from a previous generation. How has it shaped who you are today?
One of my beloved Aunt Bee’s favorite sayings was a short poem she often recited and lived by. I can still hear her voice when I read it:
“If wisdom’s ways you wisely seek,
Five things observe with care:
Of whom you speak,
To whom you speak,
And how and when and where.”
She always emphasized the word To in “To whom you speak,” a subtle reminder that the audience matters just as much as the message. It was simple advice, but it carried a lifetime of wisdom about kindness, discretion, and thoughtful communication.
